The Greening Belize App is the official platform of the Greening Belize Initiative, a national campaign led by the Belize Forest Department to plant one million trees by 2030. Endorsed by Cabinet in late 2025, the Initiative brings together citizens, schools, communities, businesses, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations in a shared effort to restore Belize’s landscapes and secure a greener future.

Every tree planted makes a difference. Whether you plant one tree in your backyard or organize a large community planting event, your contribution counts towards Belize’s national target.

Why this Initiative Matters

Belize’s forests are among the country’s greatest natural assets. They provide habitat for wildlife, protect watersheds, improve water quality, reduce soil erosion, store carbon, support agriculture, and help communities adapt to climate change. Forests also contribute significantly to Belize’s economy through tourism, sustainable forestry, and the many ecosystem services they provide.

However, Belize’s forests continue to face increasing pressures from wildfires, deforestation, land degradation, urban expansion, and the impacts of climate change. Restoring degraded areas and increasing tree cover are essential to safeguarding biodiversity, improving climate resilience, and ensuring healthy ecosystems for future generations.

The Greening Belize Initiative provides every Belizean with an opportunity to be part of the solution.

Supporting Belize’s National and International Commitments

The Greening Belize Initiative complements Belize’s commitment under the Bonn Challenge, an international effort to restore degraded and deforested landscapes. Through the Bonn Challenge, Belize has pledged to restore 130,000 hectares of degraded land by 2030, including:

• 50,000 hectares of forest ecosystems, including riparian forests and mangroves.
• 80,000 hectares of agricultural landscapes through sustainable land management and restoration practices.

While the Greening Belize Initiative focuses on planting one million trees across the country, many of these planting efforts will also contribute towards Belize’s Bonn Challenge restoration target. Together, these initiatives strengthen the country’s commitment to biodiversity conservation, climate action, and sustainable development.
